ACSR or Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced Wires are, as the name suggests, reinforced, high strength, high capacity stranded aluminum conductors that are used in the transmission of electricity through overhead power lines. Made up of several metal strands, the outer strands of ACSR wires are made of an extremely high grade of pure aluminum owing to its properties of excellent conductivity, low weight, and cost-effectiveness. ACSR and many of its variations find widespread adoption due to the special characteristics each of the standards offers that justifies the additional expense. The core strand is steel, which owing to its high tensile strength and lower elasticity, lends support to the reinforced cable and ensures that the conductor does not sag under its weight. Hot-dipped High Tensile Galvanised Steel or HTGS wires is the preferred grade of steel alloy. Manufacturers of HTGS wires take great care in ensuring a high standard of fabrication owing to the high-risk nature of their environment and the rigorousness of their application.
